چکیده

We study reductions that limit the extreme adaptivity of Turing reductions. In particular, we study reductions that make a rapid, structured progression through the set to which they are reducing: Each query is strictly longer (shorter) than the previous one. We call these reductions query-increasing (query-decreasing) Turing reductions. We also study query-nonincreasing (querynondecreasing) Turing reductions. These are Turing reductions in which the sequence of query lengths is nonincreasing (nondecreasing). We ask whether these restrictions in fact limit the power of reductions. We prove that query-increasing and query-decreasing Turing reductions are incomparable with (that is, are neither strictly stronger than nor strictly weaker than) truth-table reductions and are strictly weaker than Turing reductions. In addition, we prove that querynonincreasing and query-nondecreasing Turing reductions are strictly stronger than truth-table reductions and strictly weaker than Turing reductions. Despite the fact that we prove query-increasing and query-decreasing Turing reductions to in the general case be strictly weaker than Turing reductions, we identify a broad class of sets A for which any set that Turing reduces to A will also reduce to A via both query-increasing and query-decreasing Turing reductions. In particular, this holds for all tight paddable sets, where a set is said to be tight paddable exactly if it is paddable via a function whose output length is bounded tightly both from above and from below in the length of the input. We prove that many natural NP-complete problems such as satisfiability, clique, and vertex cover are tight paddable.

Blocking, Monotonicity, and Turing Completeness in a Database Language for Sequences and Streams

We propose a database language, based on simple extensions of the relational data model and SQL, and show that it is Turing-complete and supportive of sequences and data streams. In fact, we obtain a simple characterization of the blocking/non-blocking behavior of queries and operators on streams: we show that non-blocking operators can be characterized algebraically by the monotonic behavior o...

Query Languages and Data Models for Database Sequences and Data Streams

We study the fundamental limitations of relational algebra (RA) and SQL in supporting sequence and stream queries, and present effective query language and data model enrichments to deal with them. We begin by observing the well-known limitations of SQL in application domains which are important for data streams, such as sequence queries and data mining. Then we present a formal proof that, for...

N ov 2 00 5 Every Sequence is Decompressible from a Random One ∗

Nonuniform Reductions and NP-Completeness

Nonuniformity is a central concept in computational complexity with powerful connections to circuit complexity and randomness. Nonuniform reductions have been used to study the isomorphism conjecture for NP and completeness for larger complexity classes. We study the power of nonuniform reductions for NP-completeness, obtaining both separations and upper bounds for nonuniform completeness vs un...
